Our Story

NAMIKO | [Naa-Mee-Koh ] ~ Child of the wave.

Founded in a small town on South Africa’s east coast by local surfer, Sarah Horlock, the idea for NAMIKO was born amid countless bikini mishaps in the surf. Constantly struggling with tops that never stayed in place and bottoms that quickly stretched out, she soon realised that regular swimwear just wasn’t designed for active living. Frustrated by not getting the freedom she craved she decided to take matters into her own hands, drawing on her experience as a surfer, diver and former lifeguard, and spurred by a firm sense of self-belief, she inspected a bikini and decided she could do better. Armed with a borrowed sewing machine and a head full of ideas, she taught herself how to design and sew the kind of swimwear she wished existed.

Recognising a need for well-made, better fitting swimwear that's practical enough to withstand the waves and comfortable enough to wear all day long, NAMIKO aims to bridge the gap between function and fashion. By fusing classic silhouettes with premium materials and a surfers minimalist style, we bring you a collection of timeless designs featuring the perfect balance of quality, performance and seamless comfort. No frills. No fuss. Just the essentials needed to make you look and feel great without having to worry about losing your suit to the waves!

Brand Values

Committed to sustainable, domestic production, NAMIKO is a proudly South African, homegrown brand. All our materials are sourced locally and every step in the design and manufacturing process takes place in-house at our small studio located on the North Coast of KwaZulu Natal. There's no factory, warehouse, or mass production of our product, so when you buy from us you get a meticulously handcrafted, limited edition swimsuit!

We love the planet and support slow fashion, a sustainable movement of slowing down the rate of clothing consumption by making garments that last longer and transcend seasonal trends. Each piece in our collection is hand cut and individually made-to-order to reduce the waste of overproduction and ensure you get a piece as unique as you are!

Manufactured using high quality, OKEA-TEX certified, UV protective (UPF 50+), chlorine and abrasion resistant fabrics with durable reinforced stitching, every piece in our collection has undergone rigorous testing and refinement both in and out of the water.

As surfers we know how important it is to take care of the world around us which is why we follow a strict plastic free policy, use recyclable materials in all our packaging and strive to implement earth friendly business practices wherever possible.

giving back

We aim to design, source and manufacture in a way that not only minimises our impact on the environment but also gives back to our local community by supporting other small businesses and various outreach initiatives. Read our blog for more!
